MOVED A FEW HOUSES DOWN THE STREET FROM WHERE SHE GREW UP AND HAS BEEN HAD AN INTERNSHIP WITH KIEWIT AND HER, I BELIEVE SENIOR YEAR, THEN GRADUATED AND CAME RIGHT BACK TO WORK FOR KIEWIT, WHERE SHE'S BEEN EVER SINCE.

THIS IS AN EXISTING SITE WITH AN EXISTING BUILDING THAT'S APPROXIMATELY 49,000FT², AND THE SITE IS JUST UNDER FOUR ACRES TOTAL.

AND THE APPLICANT IS REQUESTING THE REZONING IN ORDER TO ALLOW FOR AN EXISTING TENANT NAMED BUSHNELL TO BASICALLY TRANSFORM THEIR OPERATION FROM MORE OF A WAREHOUSE TYPE USE TO MORE OF A RETAIL TYPE USE TO FIT THEIR BUSINESS MODEL.

YOU CAN SEE ON THE ZONING MAP HERE ON THE LEFT OF THE SCREEN, THE SITE OUTLINED IN RED IS ZONED BP TWO IN THAT PURPLE COLOR.

AND ON THE FUTURE LAND USE MAP, IT IS DESIGNATED FOR BUSINESS PARK TYPE USES.

THE PROPOSED REZONING IS TO CP4, WHICH IS A COMMERCIAL DISTRICT THAT WOULD ACTUALLY ALLOW THE INDUSTRIAL USES THAT FIT IN THE OTHER TENANT SPACES CURRENTLY WITH RETAIL.

SO IT'S SORT OF A MIXTURE BETWEEN INDUSTRIAL AND RETAIL TYPE USES, BUT WE DON'T TYPICALLY ALLOW RETAIL IN OUR INDUSTRIAL ZONING DISTRICTS LIKE BP2.

HERE IS ANOTHER AERIAL IMAGE OF THE SITE AGAIN OUTLINED IN RED AT NEIMAN AND MARSHALL DRIVE.

THIS HIGHLIGHTS THE BUSHNELL TENANT SPACE.

YOU CAN SEE THERE IN THE MIDDLE, AND THEY ARE RELOCATED FROM A DIFFERENT SPACE IN THE BUILDING AND THEY'RE PREDOMINANTLY RETAIL AND IT'S JUST UNDER 6000 OR SO SQUARE FEET OF SPACE WITHIN THE BUILDING.

SO THE MAJORITY OF THE BUILDING WILL REMAIN AS INDUSTRIAL TYPE USES.

WITH THIS BEING REALLY THE ONLY RETAIL TYPE USE, I WILL SAY WE DO ALLOW A SMALL AMOUNT OF RETAIL IN INDUSTRIAL SPACES, IN INDUSTRIAL ZONING DISTRICTS, BUT NOT TO THIS SCALE.

SO YOU MAY SEE SOME INDUSTRIAL AREAS THAT HAVE SMALL RETAIL OPERATIONS, BUT I BELIEVE THE CODE ONLY ALLOWS ABOUT A 10% AREA OF THE ENTIRE BUILDING TO BE RETAIL AND THIS WOULD EXCEED THAT.

THEY'RE LIMITING THE WAREHOUSE.

THEY JUST WANT TO KEEP THE SALES PART.

SO THEY'RE GOING FROM 15,800 AND JUST MOVING OVER TO A 5800 SQUARE FOOT SPACE SO THAT THEY'LL HAVE ABOUT 5000FT² OF RETAIL, VERY SMALL WAREHOUSE IN THE BACK.

AND SO WE'RE TRYING TO KEEP A TENANT THAT'S ALREADY HERE UNDER ALLOWED TO CONTINUE ON.

AND THIS TYPE OF ISSUE WITH THE RETAILERS SEEM TO POP UP.

THERE'S BEEN A FEW CHANGES AND UPDATES THERE AND THEN WE'LL TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE CONSTRUCTION SCHEDULE AND WRAP THINGS UP WITH QUESTIONS.

SO REAL QUICK, THIS IS JUST THE PROJECT TIMELINE.

I ALWAYS THINK IT'S IMPORTANT WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT A PROJECT, YOU'VE GOT TO GO ALL THE WAY BACK TO THE BEGINNING, AND THAT STARTED IN 2016 WITH A NEW LOOK AT OLD TOWN STUDY.

THAT WAS A COMMUNITY DRIVEN PROCESS THAT REALLY LED TO A LOT OF EXCITEMENT ABOUT SOME POTENTIAL RENOVATIONS AND CHANGES DOWN HERE IN OLD TOWN, SPECIFICALLY WITH THIS WITH THIS CAMPUS, WHICH HAVE ULTIMATELY LED TO THE COMMUNITY CENTER, SENIOR CENTER STUDY AND LED TO A FUNDED PROJECT.

THAT FUNDED PROJECT WAS PRIOR TO COVID.

AND REMEMBER, WE HAD HIT THE PAUSE DURING COVID AND WE WERE KIND OF ON A LONG 2 YEAR DELAY.

SINCE THEN, WE CAME BACK.

WE KNEW THAT OUR BUDGET PROBABLY WASN'T APPROPRIATE.

A LOT OF THINGS HAD CHANGED.

WE WANTED TO REVISIT THE PROJECT, SO WE DID SOME PRE CONSTRUCTION PROGRAMING AND SCHEMATIC DESIGN.

THEN WE HAD A LOT OF DISCUSSION WITH THE COUNCIL, INCLUDING AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, THE SIGNIFICANT WORKSHOP WE HAD IN DECEMBER OF 2022 OF LAST YEAR.

WE GOT SOME GREAT DIRECTION FROM CITY COUNCIL THAT NIGHT AND WE THINK THE PROJECT IS REALLY SHAPING UP WITH THAT DIRECTION.

THAT LED TO US WORKING ON DESIGN, DESIGN, DEVELOPMENT AND COST ESTIMATION.

AND THEN OF COURSE WHERE WE ARE TONIGHT, TO SEEK FORMAL APPROVAL ON THE CIP BUDGET AMENDMENT THAT WE TALKED ABOUT BACK AT THE WORKSHOP AND ALSO AGREEMENT FOR CONSTRUCTION.

SO I ALWAYS FIND IT INTERESTING THAT WE JUST BOIL THIS DOWN TO FIVE BUBBLES TALKING ABOUT THIS PROJECT.

BUT THIS PROJECT'S BEEN A LOT OF WORK BEHIND THE SCENES.

I KNOW PARKS AND REC, WE ARE ECSTATIC ABOUT WHERE THIS PROJECT IS GOING, HOW IT'S SHAPING UP AND SUPER EXCITED TO KIND OF ROLL SOME OF THAT STUFF OUT TONIGHT.

SO REAL QUICK AGAIN, YOU KNOW, WHAT'S DRIVING THE PROCESS AND WHAT WE THINK ABOUT EVERY TIME WE MAKE A DECISION OR THINK ABOUT THE DESIGN OF THE PROJECT IS WE TALK ABOUT THESE PROJECT GOALS. SO AGAIN, WE ALWAYS GOT TO KEEP IN THE FOREFRONT OF WEAVING TOGETHER OLD TOWN, ENHANCING THE OLD TOWN VISIBILITY ACROSS THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY AND BEYOND, CONNECTING TO THE ADJOINING NEIGHBORHOODS, BUILDING AND UPLIFT, A SENIOR COMMUNITY.

THAT WAS A BIG PIECE OF THIS WITH, YOU KNOW, THE CHANGE WITH THE COMMUNITY CENTER AND SENIOR CENTER AND THEN, OF COURSE, IMPROVING OPERATIONS AND MAXIMIZE THOSE RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES, WHICH I THINK IS REALLY HAPPENING.

SO THAT'S KIND OF THE BACKGROUND.

THIS DELIVERY METHOD HAS WORKED REALLY WELL FOR THESE LARGER PROJECTS THAT ARE VERY ROBUST AND HAVE A LOT OF MOVING PARTS.

THIS BEING A RENOVATION AND THE SIZE IT IS, THIS FELT LIKE A REALLY GOOD VEHICLE TO BRING THIS PROJECT FORWARD.

SO WE'LL BE SEEKING APPROVAL FROM THE COUNCIL FOR THAT CMAR CONTRACT WITH TURNER.

THEY'VE ALREADY COMPLETED PRE-CONSTRUCTION SERVICES AND COST ESTIMATION.

THIS WILL TAKE THIS FORWARD, WAIVE THE SEALED BID PROCESS AND DO AN AGREEMENT FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE IMPROVEMENTS.

AND THAT ARTIST IS A, ITRA ICON, WHICH IS ACTUALLY TWO ARTISTS IN ONE.

THEY COLLABORATED TOGETHER ON A MURAL ABOUT FOUR YEARS AGO, LOVED IT AND HAVE BEEN DOING MURALS TOGETHER EVER SINCE.

THEY'VE DONE ABOUT 43 MURALS TOGETHER.

IT'S TWO ARTISTS, ISAAC TAPIA AND ROD FIGO ALVAREZ.

SO WE'RE EXCITED TO GET THEM ON BOARD AND HOPEFULLY SEE WHAT NEXT STEPS ARE.

THE LAWN AREA THAT'S SURROUNDED BY BASICALLY A PARTIAL HEIGHT WALL, WHICH WILL ALLOW IT TO BE UTILIZED FOR EXTERIOR FUNCTIONS AND ACTIVITIES PROGRAMING DURING THE SUMMER.

THE PICKLEBALL COURTS, WHICH ARE THE VERY CENTER PORTION OF IT, AND THEY ARE REALLY THE CENTERPIECE OF THE NEW PARK LIKE ENVIRONMENT.

THE AREA DESIGNATED J, WHICH WAS A SYNTHETIC TURF AREA, BASICALLY AN EXTERIOR RECREATION ZONE.

AND THEN TO THE NORTH OF THAT, AN EXTERIOR, JUST SHUTTLE BALL, SHUTTLE BOARD AND PING PONG COURT AREA THAT BASICALLY ACTS AS AN ANCILLARY AREA TO THE PICKLEBALL COURTS.

ON THE EASTERN END OF THE SITE, YOU HAVE THE NEW ENTRY TO THE COMMUNITY CENTER THAT'S CONNECTED VIA A SERIES OF CANOPIES THAT WEAVE INTO THE BUILDING.

AGAIN, PICKING UP ON THIS IDEA OF CONNECTIVITY.

THIS CENTRAL PORTION HERE IS THE FLEX/YOUTH ADDITION THAT'S SURROUNDED BY A LANDSCAPED AREA AND THEN ON THE FARTHEST EAST SIDE IS THE ENTRY, THE HASKINS ENTRY, WHICH IS ESSENTIALLY ACTING AS WHAT WOULD BE THE NEW SENIOR CENTER LOCATION.

THIS IS AN AERIAL VIEW ILLUSTRATING THE PICKLEBALL COURTS AND A FEW THINGS TO NOTE ABOUT THIS.

AS YOU CAN SEE, THIS IS THE AREA THAT WAS PARKING LOT BEFORE.

NOW IT'S BEING CONVERTED INTO A VERY SORT OF GREEN AREA WITH THE PICKLEBALL COURTS ACTING AS THE CENTRAL SORT OF ELEMENT WITHIN IT.

THE VEGETATION AND THE TREES TO THE RIGHT CREATE A RAIN GARDEN.

AS WE BEGAN TO STUDY THE EXTERIOR PALETTE OF THE BUILDING.

AS YOU KNOW, ONE OF THE CRITICAL THINGS THAT WE RAN INTO IS JUST RECOGNIZING THERE WAS A NEED TO UPDATE THE BUILDING'S FACADE TO GET IT, TO GET IT TO BE SORT OF MORE MAINTAINABLE AND TO FUNCTION BETTER FROM AN ENVIRONMENTAL STANDPOINT.

AS WE BEGAN TO STUDY HOW TO DO THAT, WE REALLY REFERENCED BACK TO SOME OF THE MATERIALITY AND TEXTURES FROM OLD TOWN, AS WELL AS THINKING ABOUT SOME OF THE COLORS AND

YOU CAN START TO SEE THE NEW TEXTURED METAL THAT WE'RE WRAPPING AROUND THE UPPER PART OF THE EXISTING GYMNASIUM PIECE.

WE'RE UTILIZING A REALLY PRAGMATIC MATERIAL, REPLACING ESSENTIALLY WHAT WAS THERE AS A INSULATED WALL PANEL WITH A NEW WALL PANEL SYSTEM THAT'S SIMILAR TO IT, BUT UTILIZING TEXTURE TO CREATE SOME VARIETY AND A SLIGHT DIFFERENT COLORATION ALONG IT SO IT WILL HAVE SOME REFLECTIVITY, SOME MORE MODERN TAKE ON WHAT WAS EXISTING. AND THEN YOU'RE STARTING TO SEE AS WELL, THE CANDIDATE BE MOVING FROM THE OUTSIDE AND REINFORCING THE SENSE OF CONNECTIVITY.

AGAIN WITH THE IDEA THAT WE'RE CREATING THAT VISUAL CONNECTIVITY.

AND THEN YOU CAN SEE THE PICKLEBALL COURTS AND THE FENCING THAT WRAPS AROUND THE PARK AREA AS PART OF THE SITE DEVELOPMENT.

AND THEN THIS IS OF YOU LOOKING ALONG THE PORCH AREA THAT BASICALLY ACTS AS A TRANSITION ZONE BETWEEN THE GYMNASIUM AND THE SYNTHETIC TURF TOWARDS THE RIGHT.

AGAIN, THIS IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR US TO CREATE A PLACE THAT BECOMES A CIVIC DESTINATION, SOMETHING YOU CAN UTILIZE FOR A VARIETY OF FUNCTIONS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, AND ESPECIALLY WHEN IT'S HOT AND SUNNY OUT, YOU'LL HAVE SOME SHADE PROTECTION AT THOSE IN THOSE AREAS AND YOU CAN KIND OF CATCH A GLIMPSE OF THE MURAL AT THE AT THE FAR END OF THAT.

SO EVERY ALL THOSE AREAS IN YELLOW ARE BASICALLY EITHER MEETING SPACES OR LOUNGE SPACES OR PART OF THE ENTRY FUNCTIONS.

THE TWO AREAS IN BLUE IN THE MIDDLE ARE BOTH ENCLOSED MEETING SPACES.

THERE ARE SORT OF FLEX MEETING SPACES FOR THE FOR THE COMMUNITY CENTER.

THE ONE ON THE SOUTH IS THAT YOUTH FLEX PIECE THAT WE WERE TALKING ABOUT EARLIER IN THE COPPER COLOR AND ON THE NORTH IS SORT OF A REPURPOSING OF THE EXISTING AV ROOM THAT'S THERE NOW.

WE ARE GOING TO GIVE YOU AN OVERVIEW AND A RECAP OF OUR RECENT EXPERIENCE HOSTING FOUR KANSAS CITY AREA HIGH SCHOOL INTERNS THROUGH THE PRO X PROGRAM.

SO YOU MIGHT ASK, WHAT IS PRO X? WELL, IT'S A PROGRAM WHERE KANSAS CITY METRO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS SPEND 25 HOURS A WEEK FOR FIVE WEEKS INTERNING WITH A LOCAL BUSINESS OR GOVERNMENT THAT THEY HAVE AN INTEREST IN PARTICIPATING.

STUDENTS SPEND FOUR HOURS PER WEEK WORKING WITH PRO COACHES ON THEIR OWN PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND 21 HOURS A WEEK ON SITE AT THEIR EMPLOYER.

STUDENTS WHO SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE THE INTERNSHIP RECEIVE A STIPEND OF $1,250 AND RECEIVE ONE HOUR OF ACADEMIC CREDIT.

OTHER THAN OUR TIME, THERE WAS NO COST TO THE CITY FOR HOSTING THESE STUDENTS.

THE PROGRAM IS FUNDED BY CHERY COMPANY, A SPORTS FASHION BRAND FOUNDED BY CEO THALIA CHERY, A FORMER COLLEGIATE MULTI-SPORT ALL-AMERICAN WHO RESIDES IN KANSAS CITY.

WE FOUND OUT ABOUT PROX THROUGH MAYOR BOEHM, WHO IS AN ACQUAINTANCE OF MS. CHERRY, I BELIEVE THROUGH THE GREATER KANSAS CITY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

SO BREE RHODES WAS TASKED TO BE THE CITY'S PROGRAM COORDINATOR FOR PROX, AND SHE'S GOING TO RECAP THE DETAILS OF OUR FIRST EXPERIENCE WITH THE PROGRAM.

HELLO, MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE COUNCIL.

AS JIM MENTIONED, MY NAME IS BREE RHODES AND I'M AN HR SPECIALIST HERE AT THE CITY.

SO WE KICKED OFF THIS PROX INTERNSHIP AT A MARCH HIRING EVENT.

IT WAS AN ON THE SPOT HIRING EVENT.

AND SO IT WAS MYSELF AND THREE OTHER CITY REPRESENTATIVES APRIL BERETTA, MANDY DANLER AND JIM BOWERS.

IT WAS SET UP LIKE A CAREER FAIR SO THE STUDENTS COULD COME AND PICK AND CHOOSE THE AREA EMPLOYERS WHO THEY GOT TO MEET WITH OR RATHER INTERVIEW WITH SINCE IT WAS ON THE SPOT HIRING. SO THERE WERE 600 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS THAT WERE HIRED AT THIS EVENT BY 123 AREA EMPLOYERS.

WE ORIGINALLY HIRED FIVE INTERNS AND THEN FOUND OUT THE FIRST DAY THAT ONE OF THEM WOULD NOT BE JOINING US.

SO WE HAD A GREAT GROUP OF FOUR INTERNS FROM LEFT TO RIGHT.

HERE WE HAVE KAVYA PATEL, MAC FIR, ISAIAH WALKER AND ASHLEY BROYLES.

SO WE HIT EVERY AGE GROUP WITH THEM.

WE HAD ONE THAT WAS HEADING INTO HER FRESHMAN YEAR AND THEN THE OTHER ONE WAS HEADING INTO HER SENIOR YEAR.

SO WE HIT JUNIOR AND SENIOR OR JUNIOR AND SOPHOMORE IN THERE AS WELL, AND THEY DID RANGE IN LOCATION.

SO WE HAD ONE CLOSE TO HOME FROM SHAWNEE MISSION, ONE FROM BLUE VALLEY, BLUE SPRINGS, AND THEN PARK HILL.

SO TO BE FAIR, WE DID WARN HIM OF THE COMMUTE TO LENEXA FROM PARK HILL, AND HE WAS STILL SURPRISED ON THE FIRST DAY, BUT HE MADE IT WORK.

SO AS MENTIONED, IT IS A FIVE WEEK PROGRAM AND WE DESIGNED IT AS A ROTATIONAL EXPERIENCE.

WE DID HAVE NINE CITY DEPARTMENTS PARTICIPATE AND HOST THESE INTERNS.

AND REALLY OUR OVERALL GOAL WAS TO EXPOSE THESE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO LOCAL CITY GOVERNMENT AND WHAT WE DO FOR OUR COMMUNITY.

SO EACH SNIPPET HERE GIVES A LOOK INTO EACH WEEK THAT THEY SPENT WITH US.

IT DID RANGE AND VARY DEPENDING ON EACH DEPARTMENT OF HOW MUCH TIME THEY HAD WITH THESE INTERNS.

SO PARKS AND REC AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DID HOST THEM FOR AN ENTIRE WEEK WHILE THE REST OF US HOSTED THEM FOR EITHER A HALF A DAY, A FULL DAY, A COUPLE OF DAYS, THAT KIND OF THING. HERE ARE A FEW PHOTOS OF THE INTERNS TIME WITH US.

WE DID TAKE THEM TO GO SEE GOATS ON THE GO AND EXPLAIN THE HISTORY BEHIND THAT.

THEY WERE VERY EXCITED AND EQUALLY TERRIFIED ABOUT PROPELLING OR RAPPELLING DOWN THE BUILDING WITH THE FIRE DEPARTMENT.

SO THAT WAS FUN TO HEAR ABOUT.

AND THEN THERE'S A PHOTO OF THEIR FIRST DAY TO THEIR LAST DAY.

AND SO IT WAS JUST REALLY GREAT TO BE ABLE TO SEE THEM BUILD THEIR OWN CONNECTION AND THEIR OWN RELATIONSHIP AMONGST EACH OTHER THROUGHOUT THEIR TIME WITH US.

WE DID WANT TO GET SOME FEEDBACK VIA SURVEY FROM THESE INTERNS SINCE THIS WAS OUR FIRST TIME HOSTING AN INTERNSHIP LIKE THIS.

SO THROUGHOUT THESE GRAPHS HERE, THESE RATINGS, ONE WAS STRONGLY DISAGREE AND FIVE WAS STRONGLY AGREE.

SO AS YOU CAN SEE, THEY DID RATE US VERY HIGHLY THROUGHOUT THESE QUESTIONS HERE.

THEY FELT LIKE THEY LEARNED VALUABLE INFORMATION.

THEY NOW MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN CONSIDERING A CAREER IN THE PUBLIC SECTOR, AND THEY ALL STRONGLY AGREE THAT THE EMPLOYEES THAT THEY ENGAGED WITH WERE KNOWLEDGEABLE AND PROFESSIONAL. WHAT DID THEY LIKE MOST ABOUT THIS INTERNSHIP? THEY DID LIKE THE ROTATIONAL EXPERIENCE.

THEY LIKED THE DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS THAT THEY WERE ABLE TO SPEND TIME WITH AND LEARNING ABOUT DIFFERENT JOBS.

AND THEN ONE OF THEM SAID IT HELPED ME DECIDE WHAT CLASSES TO TAKE IN HIGH SCHOOL.

SO I FEEL LIKE AT THAT AGE, YOU NEVER REALLY KNOW WHAT YOU WANT TO DO.

SO THAT'S ALWAYS NICE TO BE ABLE TO HAVE SOME TYPE OF INFLUENCE THERE.

WHAT DID THEY LIKE LEAST? THEY DID SAY SOME MEETINGS WERE TOO LONG, MAYBE NOT ENOUGH TIME IN SOME DEPARTMENTS DUE TO IT BEING A SHORT SCHEDULE.

THEY DID HAVE TO DO A PRESENTATION, BUT THAT IS A PROX REQUIREMENT.

SO UNFORTUNATELY MY HANDS WERE TIED THERE.

HOWEVER, NEXT YEAR WE CAN LOOK INTO EXTENDING LUNCH BREAKS TO A LITTLE BIT LONGER THAN 30 MINUTES.

ALL OF THEM SAID THAT THEY WOULD RECOMMEND THIS INTERNSHIP TO OTHER STUDENTS.

THEY REALLY SPECIFICALLY ENJOYED OUR ACTIVE COMMUNITY.

I THINK THEY WERE ALL VERY IMPRESSED WITH LENEXA AND HOW KIND EVERYONE WAS.

AND THEN ONE OF THEM SAID THAT THEY HAD ALREADY BEEN TALKING TO THEIR FRIENDS ABOUT IT.

SO JUST THE WORD OF MOUTH, I THINK, IS ALWAYS GREAT TO HEAR, TOO.

WE DID ASK FOR SUGGESTIONS, SUGGESTIONS AND FEEDBACK ON WHAT WE COULD DO BETTER FOR NEXT YEAR.

SO THEY SUGGESTED MORE HANDS ON ACTIVITIES, MAYBE ADD A QUIZ OR A GAME AT THE END OF EACH DEPARTMENT.

HOWEVER, I WOULD LIKE TO CALL OUT SOME TWO QUOTES HERE.

ONE OF THEM SAID, YOU ALL DID AMAZING AT ACCEPTING US, HEARING ABOUT OUR DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS, TELLING US ABOUT YOURSELVES AND INFORMING US OF ALL THAT YOU DO.

WITH THAT BEING SAID, I THANK YOU AND I'M TRULY GRATEFUL AND WILL CHERISH THIS OPPORTUNITY.

AND THEN ANOTHER ONE SAID, I LOVE THE FIRE DEPARTMENT.

IT MADE ME REALIZE THAT I WANT TO GO INTO THAT FIELD.

SO I THINK JUST HEARING ONE STUDENT SAY SOMETHING LIKE THAT, ESPECIALLY IN THIS HIGH SCHOOL AGE, JUST MAKES THE PROGRAM WORTH IT.

WE ALSO SURVEYED OUR MANAGERS BECAUSE WE WANTED TO MAKE SURE TO GET THEIR FEEDBACK AS WELL.

WE DID HAVE LEARNING CURVES AND LESSONS LEARNED ALONG THE WAY, BUT OVERALL EVERYONE AGREED THAT WE HAD A GREAT GROUP OF STUDENTS.

THEY WERE ENGAGED AND THEY WERE EAGER TO LEARN.

WHAT COULD WE HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY? NEXT YEAR, WE DO PLAN TO KICK THINGS OFF WITH AN IN-DEPTH SESSION WITH THE CITY MANAGER'S OFFICE.

WE DID FIND THAT A LOT OF THESE STUDENTS REALLY HAD NO IDEA WHAT CITY GOVERNMENT DOES AND WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE.

SO THIS WAY WE CAN KICK THINGS OFF THAT WAY AND THEN THEY CAN TAKE THAT KNOWLEDGE AS THEY EXPLORE EACH DEPARTMENT FROM THERE.

WE ALSO RECEIVED FEEDBACK TO GET THEM TO INTERACT WITH ELECTED AND APPOINTED OFFICIALS.

SO MAYBE WE'LL GET YOU ALL INVOLVED NEXT YEAR AS WELL.

OVERALL LESSONS LEARNED.

I THINK WE COULD PREPARE BETTER FOR THIS AGE GROUP.

IN GENERAL, THEY WERE VERY QUIET.

BUT AGAIN, THEY'RE 14 TO 18 YEARS OLD, SO THEY PROBABLY JUST DIDN'T KNOW WHAT QUESTIONS TO ASK OR THAT KIND OF THING.

BUT REGARDLESS, THEY WERE STILL INTERESTED AND EAGER TO LEARN.

AND THEN SOME OTHER LESSONS LEARNED IS MAKING IT MORE OF A TRUE INTERNSHIP.

EVEN THOUGH IT'S NOT COSTING THE CITY ANYTHING, THEY ARE STILL GETTING PAID SO WE CAN PUT THEM TO WORK A LITTLE BIT MORE.

BUT OVERALL, WE DO JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU.

SO WE TOOK A STEP BACK AND WE DECIDED TO LET THEM CHOOSE THEIR OWN PROJECT VERSUS GIVING THEM A PROJECT.

SO I DO FEEL LIKE THEY FELT MAYBE A LITTLE LOST AT TIMES BECAUSE THEIR COACH WASN'T AS HANDS ON AS MAYBE WE THOUGHT IT WOULD BE.

BUT THEIR THEIR PROJECT WAS ABOUT TRYING TO REACH MORE STUDENTS TO COME AND WORK FOR THE CITY.

SO I JUST THINK THAT THAT'S SOMETHING THAT WE COULD CONTROL MORE NEXT YEAR AND ASSIGN TO THEM AND THEN MAKE SURE THAT WE HELP FOSTER THAT MORE.

YEAH, I'M PRESUMING THE COACHES HAVE MULTIPLE BUILDINGS AND MULTIPLE PEOPLE.

SO YES, WE CAN TAKE WE CAN TAKE OWNERSHIP OF THAT AND THEY'LL SHINE.
